Yes, foods do boost our memory. Everything in our body depends on the type and amount of food that we take. Genetic factors do exists, but to a certain level only. The right type of food in right quantity would certainly enhance our system. Following is a list of food items that are proved to improve our memory and concentration, thereby improving the overall brain power.
- Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega3 fatty acids are one of the most vital element for our brain. It improves the overall brain activity and are necessary for proper nerve activity. Foods rich in Omega3 fatty acids include Deep Sea Fish(Wild Salmon, Tuna, Sardines), Flaxseeds, Walnuts.
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants are not only important for the brain but for the whole body. They decrease the free radical damage that comes with age. Antioxidants are found in berries(blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries), spinach, sprouts, broccoli, avocados, oranges etc.
- Zinc: Zinc helps increase mental alertness. It is mainly found in seafood, oysters, fish, legumes, cereals, whole grains, pumpkin seeds and meat.
- Vitamin-B: Among all the present vitamins, Vitamin-B is the most vital for the brain. Numerous research have proved that Vitamin-B reduces memory loss. So start munching on whole-grain foods, eggs, milk, grain cereals, almonds and green vegetables.
- Rosemary and Sage: Rosemary helps in improving the blood supply to the head and stimulates the brain
- Iron: Iron helps red blood cells to send oxygen throughout the body and plays an important role in the transmission of signals to the brain. They are easily found in leafy vegetables, raisins, peanut butter, eggs, liver, shellfish, meats and soybeans.
- Isoflavons: They are the natural plant oestrogen which act on oestrogen receptors in the human brains, which is a crucial area for memory. They are easily found in soya products like soya milk, tofu and soya atta, so do add some to your diet.
Remember, just adding the above mentioned foods to your diet alone won’t help. You need to give your brain the required rest to keep it healthy. A proper lifestyle coupled with an increased amount of the above food would give you great results.
